Traditional Mississippi Mud Pie is one of my all-time favorite desserts, but it’s a LOT of work. I came up with this recipe to streamline the process and make it easy to make any day of the week! With layers of cream cheese, chocolate pudding, whipped cream, and an Oreo crust, this pie is a showstopper for special occasions, but easy enough to whip up whenever you’ve got a hankering for this Southern classic.

A Chocolate Lover’s Dream Come True
Mississippi mud pie is a layered dessert that’s dense, silky, and loaded with chocolate goodness in each bite. This recipe is quite similar to my French silk pie and chocolate cream pie, with that decadent chocolate filling. However, a Mississippi mud pie adds a few more layers.
I love that this (mostly) no-bake pie can be assembled a few days before serving and placed in the fridge until it is ready to go. (While the crust does need to be baked, you can swap in a store-bought one if you’d like!) This dessert is my go-to for a summer barbecue or potluck, but with its rich flavor and easy prep, you’ll really want to make it all year long!

My Best Tips and Variations for Mississippi Mud Pie
This recipe is pretty foolproof, but here are some simple tips, along with a few variations, to make sure it comes out perfect every single time.
- Use a store-bought crust. If you are short on time, you can easily swap in a premade Oreo crust.
- Let the crust cool completely. After you bake the Oreo crust, allow it to fully cool. If the crust is slightly warm, the cream cheese layer will melt and be runny.
- Make it ahead. Mississippi mud pie is a great dessert to keep in your freezer. Simply follow the recipe and skip adding the Cool Whip. Freeze the pie, and then when ready to serve, simply let it thaw in the fridge. Add the Cool Whip and the remaining toppings when it is back to room temperature.

More Topping Options for Mississippi Mud Pie
While chocolate shavings, crushed pecans, and chocolate syrup are the traditional toppings, you can add whatever you’d like to this recipe. Here are some of my favorite ideas:
- Chopped strawberries
- White chocolate shavings
- Chocolate Cool Whip
- Coffee Cool Whip
- Crushed Oreos
- Nutella drizzle
How To Store Leftovers
Leftover Mississippi mud pie can be stored in the refrigerator. Loosely cover the extra pie with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for up to 3 days. The pie can also be frozen for up to 1 month in the freezer. When ready to eat, place the pie in the refrigerator to thaw.

I planned to make this for a few weeks now, but I kept snacking on the Oreos! But, when I finally did this was a killer recipe. Loved the cream cheese/cool whip mixture paired with the chocolate pudding and oreo crust. Definitely making this one again.
